Easter is hopping around the corner at full speed – are you ready? If you’re still looking for that special touch to add to this year’s festivities, consider a green Easter egg hunt! With a few family fun ideas, you can create an unforgettable Easter day while using environmentally friendly alternatives to plastic grass and eggs.

Grow Your Own Wheatgrass

Wheatgrass is a gorgeous grassy plant that compliments centerpieces and Easter baskets, and it’s almost ridiculously easy to grow!

  • Purchase wheat berries from a natural health store, or online.
  • Soak them overnight in a bowl of water.
  • Prepare your container. If using an Easter basket, line the bottom with plastic to catch moisture. If using a pot, add a thin layer of gravel to promote drainage.
  • Spread 1 ½ to 2 ½ inches of potting soil in the bottom of your container.
  • Sprinkle the wheat berry seeds over the soil.
  • Cover the berries with a very thin layer of potting soil.
  • Water them gently but thoroughly. A spray bottle works perfectly!
  • You can place a loose tent of Saran Wrap over the container to mock a greenhouse, but it’s optional.
  • Keep them in a shady spot until they sprout (1-3 days).
  • Place it in the sunshine, keep it moist, and watch it grow!

Dye Your Own Easter Eggs

Use a store-bought kit, or make your own dye- either way, the kids will love this activity!

  • Dye cooled hardboiled eggs the day before the egg hunt.
  • Have the kids decorate them with stickers or stamps.
  • Hide the eggs the next morning before the kids wake. And don’t forget to hide some in the wheatgrass!

The best part of a green Easter celebration is the edible leftovers. The hardboiled eggs make a great snack, and you can experiment with wheatgrass recipes! That’s right, wheatgrass makes nutritious juice and snacks while serving as decoration. For more information on wheatgrass and dying Easter eggs, check out the following websites:
