I’m a long time Law and Order SVU fan. Lately, thought, it all seems a little too dark – my heroine, Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) gets a little more bitter each season and her partner Elliott has been AWOL for way too many episodes.
It’s all good. I have a new show to watch to get my murder fix. I’m absolutely fascinated by Castle and Beckett, the newest crime fighting duo in town.
Newcomer Stana Katic is like ‘Mariska lite’ – still all kick-butt woman, but with a playful edge that lurks around her mouth and gives a little extra sparkle to her cynical cop eyes. I find myself watching the male lead, however – I’m really, really glad Nathan Fillion didn’t follow his childhood dream of becoming a high school teacher.
I vaguely remembered Fillion from ‘Desperate Housewives’ when someone mentioned the name of the hunk starring in the new show ‘Castle’ – but wow. Fillion is more than a hunk – he’s a hunk with a brain. As Richard Castle, he manages to fill out his Kevlar vest with the word ‘WRITER’ across the front quite nicely, and charmingly trades witty repartee with Katic – who co-stars as Detective Kate Beckett.
Castle is a crime writer who just killed off his main character – Derek Storm – and needs inspiration for a new series. When some psycho starts offing women just like they get killed in Castle’s thrillers, he manages to get himself attached as a consultant to the long-suffering detective assigned to the case.
Beckett doesn’t seem to mind too much, despite her pointed barbs and repeated instruction to Castle to ’stay in the car’ – and she’s definitely packing more heat than what’s in her shoulder holster. I’m expecting sparks to fly any episode!
Join me in my latest prime time addiction on ABC, and catch the pilot episode!
