Sometimes our options for a garden are limited by our space! That’s when we have to get creative and make a place for beauty in our life. What could be more beautiful than a rosebush?

There are roses that can thrive as well in a pot in a window or on a patio as in a bed of mulch. The first thing to do is to decide where you have room for a rose, and then research types to find one that will do well in the size pot you have room for and will also thrive in the amount of sunlight available.

Hybrid Teas, large Floribunda, Grandiflora and Shrub roses all do well in pots – you can start them out in a 5-10 gallon terra-cotta or heavy plastic post, and upgrade them into a 15 gallon container as they reach maturity. These hardy specimens do well indoors, and can be put out in nice weather as well.

The main thing to remember is that roses are susceptible to root rot, so excellent drainage must be provided. Never keep rose containers sitting on a plate or saucer – have a way for excess water to drain away from the roots.

Have access to sunlight, and provide water and food as needed and your rose will brighten your days!  For tips on planting container shrubs and flowering bushes, check out Garden Guides.
