We often think that eating healthy is impossible on a tight budget. Food prices are rising, so we need to shop smarter. In reality, eating healthy and a healthy budget go hand in hand. You can maintain a wholesome diet and a fit pocketbook as well. Try adding these healthful and budget friendly foods to your shopping cart on you next grocery trip.

Fruits and Vegetables

Apples, Bananas, Oranges
(nutrient filled, portable, longer lasting than other fruits, reasonably priced)
Frozen Vegetables
(as nutritious as fresh, easy to prepare, one of the best bargains at your store)
Potatoes
(sweet potatoes are most healthful, all are good deals)

Meats and Seafood

Eggs
(economical, loaded with protein)
Canned Salmon and Tuna
(low cost, good for you)
Ground Turkey or Chicken
(healthy, cost effective alternatives to beef)

Whole Grains

Oats
(protein, fiber, nutrients @ 30¢ per serving)
Whole Wheat Pasta, Tortillas, Bread
Popcorn

Dairy/Soy

½ gallon of skim milk or 32 ounces Soy Milk
Yogurt
(protein and calcium filled, 32 ounce tub is most inexpensive)
Mozzarella Cheese (part skim)

Dry Goods

Lentils
(fiber, protein, iron, potassium – the most affordable legume)
Beans (dry or canned)
(low cost alternative to meat and poultry)
Peanut Butter
Canned Tomatoes

I didn’t know that frozen vegetables are just as good as fresh veggies.
