No, this isn’t about growing illegal herbs on your back forty! Spring is back and begging for a green thumb up. If you’ve considered re-potting some overgrown plants or adding greenery to an empty patio space, you’ve surely furrowed your eyebrows over the cost of decorative planters and pots. Stop skimming over those inexpensive, boring old orange pots on the bottom shelf of the gardening aisle and transform them! With a couple of supplies and a few good friends, you can create beautiful planters to suit your style and budget.

Get the ladies on the phone, or print invitations for your upcoming garden party. Heard of BYOB? This is BYOP: Bring Your Own Planters. Encourage everyone to prep their containers at least 24 hours before the party by spraying the inside with a few coats of oil-based polyurethane. Let them know you are providing the rest of the materials!

Painting Time

  1. Provide an assortment of inexpensive paintbrushes or sponges, an array of water-based acrylic paints and a can of water-based clear coat. Dig out that old can of white house paint from the basement too.
  2. Apply a thin layer of white paint to the outside of the pot for foundation.
  3. Share ideas for color schemes and designs.
  4. Sketch on the pots with pencils- you can draw simple patterns and outlines, or create color borders with painters tape.
  5. Paint! This the fun part – and flicking your brush at your neighbor while her back is turned is almost mandatory.
  6. Cover the finished product with water-based clear coat.

Painting your own pots allows creative design, the perfect color scheme for your décor and an economical answer to gardening needs. Add a few friends into the mix and you have a fun, relaxing afternoon.

Once your garden is fit for company, invite some friends over for a barbeque or an outdoor potluck. Check out Celebrations’ Outdoor Party Ideas for inspiration and expert advice.
