For your next family reunion, consider the great outdoors! One of the easiest, cost effective and really fun locations for a reunion is at a campground with rental cabins, or better yet, at a national park.
Families who own an RV, trailer or tent have already paid for their rooms. For those who don’t own their own, there is the option to rent an RV or use a rental cabin. National Parks offer a wide variety of activities to please everyone; from the picky bug-and-dirt-hating cousin to the sleep-in-a-pile-on-the-floor bunch of nephews and nieces. By planning ahead, you can group yourselves together and reserve RV hook-up or tent sites.
If you have family members whose idea of experiencing nature is a walk around the block, encourage them toward a new adventure. Pair the experienced outdoor members of your family with the less experienced. If your urbane cousin Alexandra refuses any accommodation that doesn’t have a private bath, book her a room in the park lodge. Most are beautiful and rustic, but do offer 3-4 star amenities.
Each family can be responsible for their own meals, but you can plan to congregate around one big campfire every night to toast marshmallows and share the excitement of your day. Here are some of the activities offered at most National Parks:
• Free hiking for everyone! There are even wheel chair accessible trails
• Free educational ranger hikes and evening campfire under the stars
• Bus sightseeing tours
• Horseback and mountain bike riding
Don’t underrate the value of just sitting on your porch in the woods or finding a spot overlooking a spectacular view to read a book.
National Parks encourage families to plan reunions and offer group room rates and seasonal discounts.
