Today most people are looking for ways to save money entertaining. Did you know that if you host a progressive dinner, you’ll only have to pay for and serve one course of the meal?
To work best, a progressive dinner needs at least four people or couples who live within a short drive of each other. This money saving way to entertain takes the pressure off of everyone, and adds a little adventure in between courses with all the driving around. Several couples may be able to carpool and save gas money too!
The group should pick a food theme like Italian or Mexican food. To be fair, ask everyone to draw a course out of a hat. (If this idea catches on with your group, you can eventually just take turns.) Agree ahead of time if each hostess is responsible for a suitable wine, and at what price, to accompany their course.
An important tip to keep in mind for all of the courses is that the recipes chosen can be made ahead so that each hostess is ready when the group arrives. It’s also smart to have an idea of how much time you want to spend on each course. Otherwise, you could be having breakfast right after your last stop!
- First Stop: Appetizers
- Second Stop: Salad or soup course
- Third Stop: Main Course
- Fourth Stop: Dessert and coffee/tea
Additional tip: If you have a group that lives too far apart, offer to host a pot-luck dinner at your home and then assign everyone a course. You can still have a theme, still share the costs, and still have a lot of fun! Make the men-folk do the dishes ☺
