Our nation’s capital, Washington, DC, is a sight to behold. Breathtakingly beautiful, full of history and seething with never-ending drama; it is the ‘must see’ U.S. city. Everyone should visit once, but I must warn you, one visit will leave you wanting more!
In this time of tight family budgets, Washington, DC is one of the most wallet-friendly cities in our great country. Throughout the year, excellent hotel and airfare deals abound, and the list of fun and free activities in the city is nearly endless! So book your hotel, rental car and flight and explore our fascinating capital. Here is a short list to get you started…
- Visit the Smithsonian National Zoo! It is a mesmerizing treat for all ages. From elephants to pandas, giraffes to orangutans to the precious new additions – gorilla, anteater and leopards, the zoo is sure to please.
- View the original Declaration of Independence at the National Archives (no Ben and Riley adventures please – National Treasure notwithstanding!), then tour the U.S. Capitol and learn about its history as well as the work that is done there.
- Enjoy the Memorials at night when they are beautifully illuminated and virtually crowd-less, or take pleasure in free performances most evenings at the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage.
- Pack a picnic and enjoy it on the National Mall., then visit the National Air and Space Museum, and take a guided tour of the Washington National Cathedral or the National Museum of Art.
- Seasonal events are plentiful as well – Cherry Blossom Festival, Fourth of July and Christmas represent just a sampling of the fantastic and free Washington, D.C.
