Hanging baskets are a quick and easy fix to add dramatic bursts of color to your outdoor spaces. It doesn’t matter if your patio entertaining space is large or small – hanging containers with a mix of plants draw the eye upward and transform your space into a captivating explosion of color! The beauty of these planters is simple because they work anywhere – a roof top terrace, a backyard patio, a poolside deck, a front porch and everything in between.

Start with a wire frame basket. Press in moist sphagnum moss. Fill with potting soil and some slow-release fertilizer. For your plants, choose plants that enjoy similar growing conditions. If simplicity and impact are your goals, use single colors in your baskets. On the other hand, baskets with three or more colors add interest and texture.

There are many plants that flourish in hanging containers, but here are some super choices to get you started – Wave or Ramblin’ Petunias or Million Bells. These are heat and sun tolerant, come in a vast array of colors and a little bonus – you don’t have to remove the old flowers (aka ‘deadheading’). Other excellent choices are ivy geraniums (also heat tolerant) and begonias (who enjoy a little more shade). Don’t forget to add spreading plants like asparagus fern or spider plants to fill in the spaces between your blooming flower choices.

Now hang up those beautiful baskets and watch them grow. Additionally, enjoy all the ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’ from your friends as they admire your handiwork. Remember to water as needed and add fertilizer weekly to keep those blooms coming all season long!
