The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past may be a romantic comedy deemed a “chick-flick,” but it is also likely to be one of the greatest “date movies” of the year.
In a story written by Jon Lucas, Matthew McConaughey plays Connor Mead, a photographer of high fashion models who attends his brothers wedding. Things start getting spooky when he sees his childhood sweetheart, Jenny Perotti (played by Jennifer Garner) – who he had dumped years before.
As it turns out, Jenny is just the first in a long string of women that Connor dumped when he felt he was getting too close. These women all come to visit him during the wedding, and their images haunt the handsome, still single hunk. Connor begins to realize exactly what he has been missing out on since he left Jenny in the middle of the night all those years ago.
Class act Michael Douglas stars in this movie as well, playing the part of Connor’s deceased Uncle Wayne. Wayne tries to help Connor find his way to true love via the “haunting” of all the women that he dumped due to his inability to commit to anything other than being a bachelor – McConaughey comes across as believably shocked by all of the things that he did without even realizing it.
Hurting women seems to be a thing that came naturally to Connor. As he starts to see Jenny as “the one who got away”, he tries desperately to win her back even though there is already a wedding planned for her in the future.
Is it too late for Connor and Jenny? Will he really wake up and change, or will his old ‘love ‘em and leave ‘em ‘ habits when it comes to women conspire to keep him and Jenny apart forever? See a preview here.
