The Why of Relationships

One of the big questions in any relationship is one most people never ask. It’s the question ‘Why?’ and it has a lot of variations – each of which should be examined before you make a firm commitment to move to the next level.

  1. Why am I with this person? You need to ask yourself and to come up with a slightly more comprehensive answer than ‘Because I love him’.  Everything you love is not always good for you!
  2. Why do I want to spend time with this person? You might also ask if you in fact do enjoy spending time with your partner – do you have fun? Or do you just tag along?
  3. Why do I like this person? Not love, like. You have to have more compatibility than just physical attraction.
  4. Why do I want to live with this person? What are your life goals? What are his? Do you have similarities? Are the differences big enough to cause a rift?

When you start asking ‘why?’ you start getting real answers about how compatible you and your prospective mate really are. Once you start looking outside the initial window of attraction, you can see the bigger picture, and how you might fit into each others’ lives.

If a lot of the answers fall into the ‘I don’t know’ category of answers, it’s time to do some soul searching. If you can honestly answer each question in a specific, positive way, however – you may have found a keeper.
