“The more I give to thee, the more I have, for both are infinite.”
~William Shakespeare~
Shakespeare provides us with the key to a successful, healthy relationship. It is giving – and as you give of yourself, you receive in return! If you find yourself in a relationship where giving is not present, ask yourself is your relationship healthy? Can you be sure? What does a healthy relationship look like?
A fit, vigorous relationship exhibits these qualities:
- Characteristics – When a friendship precedes a romantic relationship, a good foundation is built. Humor comes easily in a friendship and translates effortlessly into your love relationship. Honesty and truthfulness breed trust. Studies show that those exhibiting physical affection daily have the strongest relationships.
- Communication – Openness in discussing important topics is essential. Talk about your finances (is one of you a spender and the other a saver?), family(do kids fit into the future?), goals(are you headed in the same direction?), and spirituality (are your beliefs similar?). Differences should be capable of being resolved and agreement should be reached when you seem to be at odds; after all you are united in this relationship!
- Coherence – Partners should respect one another. Your relationship should have a fair amount of equality (give-and-take). Sharing is indispensable whether it is resources, interests, or even chores. You should be able to rely on each others’ support during both failures and successes.
Qualities like these plus basics like kindness, respect, caring and integrity are requirements for a healthy relationship. Relationships can be challenging – but the rewards are great. As a couple, your healthy relationship should bring out the best in the both of you!
