We live in a rapidly changing world, and sometimes life is so busy that attention to personal growth or caring for others outside our limited sphere is overlooked. Do you wonder if there are ways for you to make a difference that go beyond writing a check? Sometimes the best life lessons are learned by ‘doing.’

Volunteering is becoming popular again as more generations understand its value. There are many ways for you to become more involved, and at the same time, even inspire your family and friends. When you discover a volunteer project that interests everyone, turn it into an adventure!

Begin by looking around your neighborhood. Is there a park close by? Litter is a universal problem and taking a Saturday afternoon to clean it up sets an important community example. Young children even love to help and quickly learn how to recycle. Go a step further and pull weeds or create a flower bed in your neighborhood park and then maintain it.

Many of us more fortunate and should be counting our blessings. Rounding up family members or friends to work with a Habitat for Humanity project hammering nails, or just cleaning up the construction site, can put everyone in a unique learning environment. There’s nothing like getting your hands dirty with the goal of making a better life for another family. In the process, you gain a better perspective on how to value your own.

Some individuals and even families take the time every holiday to volunteer in homeless shelters serving meals. If there is a deeper, enriching experience that trumps looking at the faces of the hungry and the homeless, I don’t know it.
