Throw a Poetry Party

If you’re tired of the same old girlfriend get-togethers, why not try something new? A poetry party can be a great way to bond with old friends and find new passions together. Invite a small group of friends over for a poetry bash. You don’t have to be well-schooled in poetry to have fun with this. Part of the fun of getting together like this is branching out and doing something a little different.

Make your invitations poems. You can either write one poem for everyone or if you’ve got the time and creativity, individual poems for each person. Don’t try for perfect poetry here, try for fun. Make it goofy and off-beat. It will let everyone know this party isn’t about taking yourselves too seriously.

Take a well-known poem, such as Robert Frost’s, The Road Not Taken and make it into a mad-lib. (You can find this poem and lots of others online) Blank out nouns and adjectives and ask the group to fill them in. You’ll end up with a fun new poem.

Ask each guest to bring two favorite poems to share with the group. If anyone in the group is actually a published poet and would like to read their own work, encourage that.

Write a Renga. Renga is a Japanese form which began as a party game, so it fits perfectly here. To be true to form, each stanza should relate to the one before it. Each poet contributes a line or stanza to a group poem. You can make this as long or as short as you want. Later, you can type the poem up and give to each of your guests as a small thank you.

Serve coffee and dessert to finish up the fun. Who knows? Maybe this will become a monthly get-together and you can kiss your cards and dice good-bye.

Look for poems to spoof on at Poetry.org.
