For those who care to look (and I did), Adam Lambert is at the top of the published Associated Press list of the 36 hopeful singers who made the final cut for 2009’s American Idol competition.
Getting a nod from all four judges at his initial audition, 26 year old Lambert pressed kisses on the hands of the lady judges, exchanged a complicated grip routine with Randy and a manly shake with Simon. “I watched you since I was, like, ten,” he told an applauding Paula Abdul. “It’s an honor just to be here in the room with you!”
Adam could kiss my hand anytime! This front runner for the title of American Idol 2009 acts, sings cabaret and is drop dead gorgeous even prior to all the styling we know will take place as the season progresses. He sang Bohemian Rhapsody but only got through about four lines before being cut off by an enthusiastic Paula. Simon snarked that he had a good voice, but was ‘theatrical’ (well, duh! A year and a half on the cast of Wicked might have something to do with that).
Adam does have some competition; Meghan Corkrey garnered her own unanimous four votes and is Simon’s personal fave (does Simon always pick girls?) She has the goods, however; a girl next door prettiness that’s been compared to Reese Witherspoon, a memorable voice and the judges’ vote as the most interesting contestant so far.
The 23 year old hails from Utah, just got divorced and has an adorable two year old. This makes her a little more easy to identify with for a large chunk of the demographic; in fact, this year’s roster boast several single moms as well as a grieving widower in a more mature cast than Idol has previously seen. Less than a third of contestants are under 21 – making the show much more interesting to my age group!
