Perhaps a gym membership isn’t in your budget or you never did like the idea of riding a bike. You keep telling yourself that you want to get more exercise, yet between work and your family you remain unmotivated.

Maybe you even think that you’re a victim of lousy ‘metabolism’. Well, let’s get that myth busted right now–weight is not always directly related to metabolism! The truth is that weight is determined by a balance. If you consume more calories than your body needs, or burns, you will gain weight. The reverse is true when you lose weight.

Aerobic exercise wins hands-down as the best quick calorie burner, but the best overall activity to ‘raise’ a metabolic rate is anaerobic training. The ideal calorie-burning exercise program needs both of these important exercises. A good rule of thumb is 75% aerobic and 25% anaerobic (weight bearing).

You may not realize it but if you have children, you are probably getting exercise just chasing them around the house. Carrying a little one on your hip has incredible anaerobic benefits! For a boost, try cranking up the boom box and dancing with your kids – it will get your blood pumping and they will have a ball!

Give power to your metabolism instead of viewing it as a problem. Think of it as the fire in your body that burns calories, and use everyday opportunities to stoke it up! You can sneak in a stretch while watching TV, or leg lifts when you’re on the phone.
