Is your porch begging for that special something to make it a comfortable and relaxing environment? Porches are a great place to enjoy to the breeze with a favorite book or an old friend, but they often lack the cozy element of a nice place to sit!

Before you run out and buy an expensive chair from the local gardening center, consider the old-time appeal of porch swing. The porch swing was a staple to many of our grandparents, and for good reason! There really isn’t a better way to enjoy the scenery and rock yourself into relaxation than to sit on a porch swing.

If you love the idea of swing, but find that a new one is not in your budget, just look around and you’re sure to find a retired swing that needs a new home. Check your local flea markets, yard sales, or even a relatives’ shed! You can also post a free ad on a community site, such as Craig’s List.

When you find an older swing, check it over for safety. You might need to replace a split board or replace a faulty chain. Porch swings are some of the sturdier pieces of furniture ever made, so you shouldn’t need to put too much time, money, or effort into its makeover. Add a fresh coat of polyurethane and you’re on your way to swinging with the breeze.

You can also use an old swing for decorative purposes. If you’re a fan of country living and crafty decor, add some old dolls to the bench, and grow a pot of flowery vines to crawl up the armrests and chains. An old porch swing is both functional and attractive. For an in-depth look at restoring and ensuring the safety of old swings, check this site for further information.
