Are you confused over all the diet information you read and wonder if you’re really making the right food choices? You check food labels for ‘low-fat’ and ‘low calorie’ foods, but which one really matters?

Many diets fail when too much emphasis is placed on low-fat or fat-free eating. Why? Because fat-free doesn’t mean no calories! Eating too many low-fat but high calorie products can sabotage your weight loss plan.

Throw away those prepackaged diet foods with ingredients you don’t understand. They may be low-fat, but they could also contain unhealthy trans fat and too many calories per serving.

Meal planning is simple when you focus on the whole picture, and make sure you are getting the nutrients you need in a healthy way.

* Add Good Carbohydrates. Raw is best! Whip up more deep green salads (spinach and romaine) with colorful vegetables (red and green peppers, carrots, and broccoli). Serve a fresh fruit salad for dessert, or a simple serving of fresh pineapple or grapes. Low carbohydrate diet fads are missing an important point— carbohydrates equal energy!

* Seek Low Fat Protein. Grilled or baked fish, chicken and turkey are easy winners. Recipes on-line are easy to find. Learn how to use legumes, nuts, and seeds in your dishes or as snacks. For mornings, a cup of low- or no-fat yogurt or cottage cheese with fresh fruit is an excellent way to start the day.

* Find the Good Fats. Push away the Crisco and grab olive or canola oil for cooking and baking. Nuts and seeds have double power for energy and are also a good source of healthy fat. Every well balanced diet needs 25-30% good fats for dynamic antioxidant power.

Starting a diet doesn’t have to be confusing. There are plenty of healthy foods that will help you achieve your goals.

Very well said Diane. Even people who don’t watch their weight can benefit from your advice. Not to mention that fresh is much tastier than pre-packaged.
