Has anyone else noticed a surge of ‘Organic Dry Cleaners’ in their community? I have, and was very curious what an ‘Organic Dry Cleaner’ is exactly. I have been looking for a way to get my sweaters clean, soft and smelling lovely, like they should go next to my skin. Could this organic route be it? An article on Green Daily confirmed it wasn’t. Overall there is no regulation of the term organic when it comes to dry cleaning- chemicals are used. I went into and upscale store in my town, one that sells high end cashmere sweaters to boot, and asked how they advise cleaning their sweaters, and to my surprise, it was to wash them yourself.
Ultimately, my ‘Dry Clean Only’ sweaters are, well, NOT. Although I have been hesitant to stray from the as directed, traditional cleaning methods, I came across some pointers on a solution to cleaning your favorite, stylish sweaters.
- Treat your sweaters like your hair since they are both protein based fibers – use shampoo and conditioner to clean them.
- No wringing or twisting – use a towel to absorb the extra H2O by laying your cleaned, wet sweater on the towel and gently “rolling” it like a sleeping bag. Wait a moment to allow it to react and then remove the sweater.
- Hang the sweater on two hangars, like a hammock, with neck/shoulders across the bar of one hangar and the waist across the bar of the second hangar.
- Hang them so there is good air circulation.
(for those of you who have been cleaning sweaters this way forever, I applaud you!)
