Need a fun day in the sun with the family, but you’re a little pinched for cash? Reasonably priced family entertainment can appear elusive, but with a little effort and imagination you can find it. The trick is in planning ahead. Start saving your spare change for gasoline, and get ready for adventure!
No matter where you live, there are lots of wonderful places your family can explore for free or nearly free. Google the Visitor’s Bureau for your city or county and you will find an abundance of listings for parks, gardens, natural areas, wildlife preserves and trails, as well as historical sites and museums. Pick your favorite and let your adventure begin!
Three simple rules apply to the perfect daytrip.
1. Choose wisely – don’t get carried away and plan an 18 hour round trip! The destination needs to be within two to three hours drive maximum. This ensures you don’t get worn out driving, and that you can spend more time at your chosen location!
2. Pack everyone’s favorite drinks (lots of water, too) and a picnic lunch. This is more economical than stopping for drinks, snacks or lunch. You can make sure it’s healthier than fast food, and it will be more convenient because it’s with you and readily available. Take a blanket for having your snack outdoors.
3. Plan an activity to do when you get there. Take along a Frisbee, football or horseshoes for an impromptu game. To create even more adventure for your children, keep the destination a secret and give hints along the way; have a special treat for the one who guesses first! Don’t forget the camera; after all, pictures make the best souvenirs.
If you can, always plan for two different locations – one indoor and one outdoor. This will keep you from staying at home because of inclement weather! If you think ahead, your family day trip could be come a monthly treat. Search your state for inexpensive local attractions at the National Park Service.
