Some people get their thrills from bungee jumping, white water rafting or mountain climbing. I get mine from shopping. I know, I know, the economy is bad and we all have to be fiscally responsible, but hear me out. I am a thrift shopper.

I’m not the only one. In fact, according to GossipGirls, Reese Witherspoon is a thrift shopper too. It seems she was spotted in Los Angeles at Hidden Treasures, snapping up bargains with her mother. Now that we’ve established a celebrity connection to my beloved pastime, let’s get busy. What are you doing this weekend?

At a time when most retailers are bemoaning their miserable existence, the thrift shop business is booming. It seems that as “going green” becomes more of a concern, people are quicker to spot the value in shopping for thrift store bargains. I’ve been a devotee for some time. When I need a getaway, I jump in the car and head for the nearest thrift store.

I’ve purchased a Marc Jacobs jersey dress for thirty dollars and an elegant vintage purse for three bucks. Dreams do come true! If you’re not a clotheshorse but are into home decorating, explore thrift shops for their outstanding values in furniture and accessories. You might spot a sleek Herman Miller coffee table or a set of stackable Scandinavian chairs for pennies on the dollar. What have you got to lose?

Thrift shops offer great bargains on quality merchandise. Your biggest investment won’t be money but time. If you want a great way to spend a weekend, slip into some comfortable shoes, make a wish list and get ready for an adventure. For those in the know, The Thrift Shopper is a great resource. On this site you’ll find a directory to great treasure troves in your hometown. Make your own treasure map and get started! Just hurry. Reese and I are right behind you!
