Vital Affirmations: Talk to Yourself

Have you noticed how often people talk badly about themselves? “I’m too skinny, too fat…not good enough for this, not good enough for that.” It’s a real bummer, isn’t it? Can you imagine a world where people felt good about themselves? What a difference that would make! The good news is you can affect your own life in a good way with positive affirmations.

Fun Fact about the Human Mind: Our thoughts actually build furrows throughout our brains to better channel our regular thinking processes. Studies show that the more often a similar thought is processed, the easier it is to get onto our head and influence us. The more often we think something, the deeper the furrow.

This means that if I spend ten years thinking my left nostril looks funny, I will believe this as truth (no matter how often my husband says my left nostril is perfectly normal). Though our negative thoughts dig deep impressions, positive thoughts can refill them and channel into new directions. We can actually train our internal chatterboxes to say nice things to us.

The next time you look in the mirror, say something nice about yourself. If your hair refuses to follow direction or your makeup can’t quite cover up your eye luggage, look in the mirror and say, “I am beautiful!” I know it sounds a little insane (you know what they say about people who talk to themselves)  but it really works!

Positive affirmations are a great way to boost confidence. Our internal chatterboxes love to nag us, but positive affirmations help us focus on our goals, dreams and self-esteem. Okay, so you don’t have to say nice things out loud, you can say them in your “inside voice” or simply think them. The more you say it, the more it becomes who you are. You’ve got nothing to lose! (Except that nagging voice who says bad things about your hair).
