To Eat or Not to Eat

MadMan the Mighty

When is it going to stop? We have to worry about pollution, racism, the economy and now trans-fats. The anxiety is enough to make me choke on my Krispy Kreme! Call me irresponsible, but I just cannot seem to forego the comfort I find in my occasional little treat. We are bombarded with announcements about the evils of trans-fats. They lurk in all the stuff we love. They hide in pizza, hamburgers, donuts and in the glorious french fry. We combat them by eating foods rich in “good fats.”

Good fats. That sounds promising doesn’t it? Well, don’t get too excited. Good fats are found in things like the five servings of fish we should eat a week. They reside in tasty morsels like kelp pills and nuts and seeds.  I know this information is important and good for all of us. I know what I should do to maintain a healthy body. However, I also know that after a bad break up or any other emotional upheaval, I’m going for the cupcake before I reach for the supplements! That’s realism.

Food makes us feel good. That’s not a bad thing. As long as we practice moderation, we’re entitled to comfort ourselves. In fact, stress is more of a danger to women’s heath than a serving of macaroni and cheese . When we eat that forbidden cannoli and feel bad about it, our bodies release a hormone called cortisol. This steroid causes the bad fat to stay in our systems longer than it should. If we are wasting time worrying about trans-fats, maybe we need to get a life!

If you decide to have a treat, decide to enjoy it guilt fee. Be heart smart but be reasonable. A preoccupation with everything we put in our mouths can negatively affect our health as much as a plate of nachos can. Get a life and remember that it’s okay to enjoy it too! Checkout the American Heart Association for more info about keeping your fat status balanced.
