Are you tired of the same old bonfire snacks? Hotdogs, roasted marshmallows and s’mores are great bonfire eats, but a little variety can toss some extra fun into the fire. With the help of one little gadget—a pie iron—bonfire food festivities have endless possibilities!
A pie iron is a little enclosed cast iron griddle on a stick; it’s perfect for making pastries, sandwiches or pizzas, and it’s fun for kids, too. At your next bonfire (or outdoor BBQ of any type), offer the requisite round of traditional foods – then top the evening off with the fun of these mountain pies.
Ingredients:
- Non-stick cooking spray (or butter)
- Two pieces of bread
- A can of your favorite pie filling (apple, cherry, blueberry…)
Directions:
- Spray the inside of the pie iron with non-stick cooking spray, or butter your bread with a thin coat of margarine.
- Place one piece of bread on one side of the griddle (buttered side against the griddle).
- Scoop your favorite pie filling onto the bread (about 3 tablespoons).
- Put your other piece of bread on top, and close the griddle.
- Hold your pie iron in the fire, a few minutes on each side, and voila!
Feel free to experiment; you can add cinnamon to spice it up, or use whatever ingredients you want. With some supervision, the kids will love making their own desserts!
