Don’t Ignore Your Sweet Tooth

Most diets expect us to ignore our sweet tooth. It’s one of the hardest things to control; however, I have a surprise! There are two natural sugar products that, if eaten in moderation, won’t ruin your diet. Unlike refined sugar, studies show that your body will process these sugars in a healthy way, letting you burn the calories instead of storing them as often happens with refined sugars.

What are they? Raw honey and blue agave sweetener – nobody can beat Mother Nature when it comes to sugar. Why raw honey over regular processed honey? Because raw honey goes through less processing, more pollen remains in the product – which adds to its nutritional value. Even diabetics can often eat honey when even a teaspoon of regular syrup or jelly will send blood sugar skyrocketing.

Honey earned its ‘nectar of the gods’ nickname because it’s not only delicious, but has other health benefits too. Did you know that honey destroys harmful digestive bacteria, stimulates the immune system, and is used to treat stomach ulcers and sore throats?

Like most people, you’ve probably never heard of blue agave sweetener. It looks a lot like honey, but is made from the blue agave plant. Its taste is closer to refined sugar and can be used to sweeten anything from beverages to baked goods.

Both raw honey and blue agave sweetener have 60 calories per tablespoon. But they are natural sugar calories and they won’t cement themselves to your hips – assuming moderate exercise is a part of your day. Yes, they both cost more than refined sugar but are worth every extra penny!

If your supermarket has an organic food section, look for them there. Otherwise, any health food store will carry them.

You can usually find honey locally, and if blue agave is more difficult, you can find it here.
